The (Original) Romanian – Hungarian chess set by “IM Biró Sándor”.

What he did…

I find the original chess set carved by International Master Biro Sandor to be truly exceptional and imbued with a unique artistry that no reproduction can match. The fact that each piece is carved by Biro himself, a master of the game, elevates this set beyond a mere functional tool—it becomes an extension of the chess spirit. Knowing that a chess master, with a peak rating of 2435, has personally shaped these pieces adds an almost tangible sense of connection to the world of competitive chess. When I use this set, it feels as though Biro’s creativity, passion, and deep understanding of the game are present in each piece, quietly guiding my strategy and decisions on the board.

The set is not just about aesthetics, but about a story. Biro began carving these pieces in the late 1980s, out of a personal dissatisfaction with the chess sets available in Romania at the time. That personal drive to create something better, something more suited to a master’s hand, resonates deeply with me as a player who values both form and function in chess sets. The history behind it, from its adoption by the Hungarian Chess Federation to its use by chess legends such as Fischer, Karpov, and Kasparov, further cements this set as an extraordinary piece of chess history.

Every time I play with this set, I can’t help but wonder, “What would IM Biro do?” It evokes an emotional connection that few other sets can. The intricate craftsmanship, combined with the chessmaster’s personal touch, makes this set not only a collector’s treasure but also a powerful tool for playing. The legacy and mastery behind each piece guide and inspire the chess player within me. Truly, this is a set for those who appreciate the deeper emotional and artistic aspects of chess.

My opinion of this design…

The chess set carved by International Master Biro Sandor stands as a remarkable fusion of artistry and chess mastery. Each piece is hand-carved by Biro himself, bringing an unparalleled personal touch that transcends traditional chess sets. With a history tied to legendary players like Fischer, Karpov, and Kasparov, and its use in Hungarian tournament play, this set is both a collector’s gem and a functional tool for serious players. The craftsmanship reflects Biro’s passion and deep understanding of the game, making it a unique, emotionally resonant set that combines beauty, legacy, and practicality.
