The 2024 SGW-“Pindus” Chess set by “SakisTsiogkasWood”.
What tHey did…
The “Pindus” set is SGW’s first and most cherished creation, taking over two years to perfect. Each piece is heavily weighted with a wool-covered base in an elegant blue shade. The name and design draw inspiration from the hardy and reliable Pindus Pony, a horse breed native to Greece’s northern mountains, reflecting strength, endurance, and timelessness.
Blending Greek cultural heritage with neoclassical and modern design, the set embodies elements of Ancient Greek sculptures. Each piece reflects a distinct yet cohesive theme:
- King: Symbolizes power and strength, with a broad, commanding silhouette inspired by Greek gods.
- Queen: Represents strategic power and beauty, inspired by the graceful forms of Greek goddesses.
- Bishop: The set’s foundational piece, retaining its original sketch with minimal alterations.
- Knight: Highlights the Pindus pony’s stamina and elegance, with sculptural details symbolizing wealth, power, and companionship in Greek mythology.
- Rook: Draws inspiration from Hellenic castles and fortresses, incorporating elements of their iconic towers while adding a unique touch.
- Pawn: Features simple, modern lines and a robust base, ensuring unity across the set.
Crafted with premium materials and meticulous attention to detail, the Pindus set reflects SGW’s Greek roots and commitment to quality. It is designed as a cultural legacy, intended to be passed down through generations.
My opinion of this design…
I absolutely love how they look and feel during a game. The design is simple yet captivating, with a harmonious flow and perfect symmetry between the pieces.
The knight, in particular, stands out with its elegant curves and lines, almost bringing it to life on the board. While I don’t usually collect contemporary chess sets, this design immediately caught my attention—just like my BCE Stage 2 set did.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
