Characterized by their large wooden cases, HAU chess clocks are notable for their reliable and affordable mechanisms, which were frequently used in other chess clocks of the era. The design of these clocks may have influenced later models produced by the Moscow Clockwork Company, as evidenced by similarities like the front-panel clock stopper.
HAU clocks were distributed widely, including by Jaques of England and various Dutch distributors, though these versions often lacked the crossed arrows on the clock face. Their durability and precision made them a popular choice for chess players and manufacturers alike.
Founded in 1875 by Paul Landenberger and Philipp Lang, HAU emerged from the earlier Großuhrenfabrik Landenberger und Lang.
