The AJedrez “Criollo” Staunton Chess Set by: “Alejo Peon Avanza”.

What Alejo did…

The Ajedrez “Criollo” Staunton Chess Set is the inspired work of a highly talented artist who has reimagined the classic Staunton design with a uniquely Argentinian twist. Each piece reflects a distinct artistic identity, setting Alejo Peon Avanza’s work apart from that of other artisans. His designs are instantly recognizable—marked by passion, imagination, and national pride.

Alejo is a carver and turner who prefers creating one-of-a-kind custom sets rather than repeating traditional forms over and over. Guided by creativity rather than convention, he produces original, bespoke chess sets that owners will cherish for years to come. His collaborative approach and willingness to tailor each piece to the customer’s vision is a defining trait that sets him apart in the world of chess craftsmanship.

The dark pieces are carved from Palo Santo (Gonopterodendron sarmientoi), a treasured wood native to Argentina. The Wichí people of northern Argentina have a deep cultural connection to Palo Santo, using it for its aromatic, medicinal, and spiritual properties. Wichí artisans are known for their handcrafted works made from this wood, often incorporating its rich knots, colors, and grain patterns. Passed down through generations, their carving techniques celebrate the natural beauty of Palo Santo. This wood is primarily sourced from the Chaco Salteño forest region.

The light pieces are made from Palo Blanco (Calycophyllum multiflorum), a wood valued for its pale, yellowish-white tone, sometimes accented by a darker heartwood ranging from ochre-brown to greenish hues. With its soft luster and subtle grain, Palo Blanco provides a gentle contrast to the darker Palo Santo. This wood is native to northern Argentina, particularly the provinces of Salta, Jujuy, Formosa, Santiago del Estero, and Chaco. It thrives in the “selva de palo blanco y palo amarillo,” a forest region along the upper Bermejo River basin near Bolivia, at altitudes between 400 and 700 meters.

The Ajedrez “Criollo” Staunton set is more than just a chess set—it’s a deeply personal expression of Argentinian heritage, craftsmanship, and artistic vision.

My opinion of this design…

The Ajedrez “Criollo” Staunton Chess Set by Alejo Peon Avanza is a stunning testament to the fusion of artistry and Argentinian heritage. This set reimagines the classic Staunton design with a vibrant, distinctly local flair, showcasing Alejo’s extraordinary talent as a carver and turner. His passion for crafting unique, bespoke chess sets shines through, making each piece a singular work of art that radiates creativity and national pride.

What sets Alejo apart is his commitment to originality and collaboration. Rather than replicating traditional designs, he crafts custom sets tailored to each customer’s vision, ensuring every piece feels personal and timeless. The result is a chess set that’s not just functional but a cherished heirloom, brimming with character.

The dark pieces, carved from aromatic Palo Santo, and the light pieces, made from the luminous Palo Blanco, create a striking contrast that celebrates Argentina’s natural beauty. These woods, deeply tied to the cultural traditions of northern Argentina, elevate the set’s aesthetic and emotional resonance. Alejo’s skillful use of these materials highlights their unique textures and tones, making each piece a celebration of craftsmanship.

The “Criollo” Staunton set is a beautiful design that transcends the game of chess. It’s a vibrant expression of Argentina’s spirit, crafted with heart and precision by an artist whose work is as inspiring as it is unforgettable. For collectors and players alike, this set is a treasure that embodies beauty, heritage, and the joy of true artistry.

Alejo has generously gifted me this beautiful chess box to house the set—completely free of charge. The box features one of Alejo’s signature chess pieces, a rook, mounted on the lid, making it both unique and instantly recognizable. It adds a personal, artistic touch that will make it easy to identify whenever I reach for it. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Alejo for this thoughtful gift—I will treasure it just as much as the stunning set it was made to protect.
