The 1880-1890 English Staunton Design chess set by “Unknown”.
What they did…
I find this 19th-century “Staunton Pattern” English chess set to be an exceptional example of historical craftsmanship, offering both a connection to the rich heritage of chess and a tactile beauty that elevates the playing experience. Made around 1880-1890 in England, this unweighted set showcases the finest traditions of English chess piece design, with its boxwood and Ebony wood composition lending it a striking visual contrast.
The craftsmanship is immediately evident in the details. The King, standing at 3.25 inches, features a distinctive cross with a triple-turned head, a hallmark of precision turning from this period. The Queen, with her shorter, triple-turned head and 15 spikes on her coronet, stands as a regal and commanding figure on the board. The high-cut mitres on the Bishops, alongside the full tower Rooks with their deep turret and six crenellations, speak to the meticulous attention to detail that defined chess sets of this era. The hand-sculpted Knights, in particular, capture the essence of the pre-Hartston era Jaques style, with a form that is both noble and ready for battle.
Though unmarked, the quality of the craftsmanship ensures that this set stands among the finer chess pieces of its time. The boxwood pieces have developed a smooth, caramel patina that attests to the age and use of the set over more than a century. The black Makassar (Ebony) wood pieces provide a striking contrast, both aesthetically and historically. The wide bases of each piece—83mm for the King, 38mm for the Pawns—ensure excellent balance and stability, negating the need for lead weighting while retaining the classic feel of unweighted sets.
The set is housed in its original polished mahogany lift-top box, which is as finely crafted as the chess pieces themselves. Lined with wine-colored felt, both the base and lid are intact and functional, preserving the elegance of the set and providing a fitting home for these distinguished chessmen. The combination of the beautifully turned pieces, rich patina, and original box make this set a true collector’s item, perfect for display or for serious play.
My opinion of this design…
Despite its age, the set remains in good, clean, playable condition, offering a seamless blend of history and functionality. The gentle wear over time only adds to its charm, a testament to the countless games it has likely seen. Whether admired for its aesthetic value or used for its playability, this chess set is a remarkable piece of history that any collector or chess enthusiast would be proud to own.
