What they did…

I proudly present the Fischer-Spassky 1972 Series Commemorative Chess Set, a tournament-sized collection that captures the essence of one of the most iconic moments in chess history. Featuring a 3.75″ King with a 1.625″ diameter base, each piece in this set is hand-carved by master artisans using the highest-grade woods, ensuring both beauty and durability. The chess pieces are heavily weighted, with luxurious billiard cloth base pads and a glossy finish that highlights the intricate details of the craftsmanship.

This set is a faithful reproduction of the chess set used by the legendary American Grandmaster Bobby Fischer during his historic 1972 World Chess Championship victory against the reigning World Champion, Grandmaster Boris Spassky, in Reykjavik, Iceland. Designed to withstand years of use, the set is constructed with reinforced Pawn collars and oversized Rook ramparts, ensuring unmatched durability. This makes it not only a beautiful piece of chess history but also a practical and resilient choice for regular play.

As with all House of Staunton chess sets, the Fischer-Spassky 1972 Commemorative Chessmen strike a perfect balance between aesthetic appeal and practical functionality. The design ensures that the pieces can endure the rigors of intense play while maintaining the elegance that has become synonymous with House of Staunton products. The craftsmanship, quality, and historical significance of this set are unparalleled, offering an unmatched experience in its price range.

Whether you’re a chess enthusiast interested in the historical significance of the game or someone seeking a durable yet elegant set for regular play, the Fischer-Spassky 1972 Commemorative Chess Set is an exceptional choice. It’s a set that honors the legacy of a legendary chess match while providing a reliable and aesthetically pleasing tool for modern-day play.

My opinion of this design…

What more can be said about such a significant piece of chess history? When you combine the brilliance of Frank Camaratta with the meticulous craftsmanship of the House of Staunton, you get an almost exact replica of the original Jaques design #50040. As someone who owns an original sister set to one of the famous sets used in the 1972 World Chess Championship, I can confidently say that this reproduction is nothing short of extraordinary.

My 1970 Jaques Fischer/Spassky set was created in the same batch as the original two sets used in the 1972 tournament, and when I compared them side by side, I am amazed at how well the House of Staunton captured every detail. The precision and care taken in this reproduction are evident in every piece, making it a true testament to the original design.

In my opinion, this is the one set to own if you’re looking for the best Fischer-Spassky reproduction. The House of Staunton has outdone itself, delivering a set that not only honors the legacy of that historic match but also stands as a beautiful and functional work of art in its own right. For anyone serious about chess history or simply looking for a stunning set to add to their collection, this reproduction is, hands down, the best choice.
