The Berliner Modern Minimalist chess set by “Royal Chess Mall”.
What they did…
The Berlin-style chess pieces, or Berliner Schachfiguren, originated in Germany. These handcrafted pieces are a true testament to the refined artistry of chess design, blending history with aesthetic sophistication.
Their slender, elongated silhouettes are nothing short of mesmerizing, exuding a grace that is immediately recognizable on any board. Carved from golden rosewood and natural boxwood, these pieces stand as a testament to superior wood craftsmanship—a nod to both tradition and meticulous artisanship.
While undeniably historical and artistically captivating, these pieces are more than just ornamental. They are functional chessmen, designed to be both played with precision and admired for their beauty. For any chess enthusiast or collector who appreciates the fusion of form and function, Berliner-style chess pieces are an exquisite addition that elevates both the game and the visual appeal of any chessboard.
My opinion of this design…
As someone who generally gravitates toward more traditional designs, I found myself unexpectedly impressed by this modern chess set after first encountering it at the club, owned by a fellow player. Despite my usual preference, the simplicity and straightforward design of this set captivated me. Its ease of play and the tactile satisfaction it provides while handling the pieces are undeniable.
While I tend to favor more classic designs, I believe this set offers an excellent introduction to chess for younger players or beginners. The durability and user-friendly nature of the pieces make it perfect for spirited play. If you’re looking for a set to engage a child or a novice, this is one I would highly recommend.
