The Staunton Design chess set by “Unknown”.

What they did…

I must say this Rosewood and Boxwood set immediately captures attention with its balanced elegance. The 4″ king, though smaller and suited for club play, embodies a refined and timeless Staunton standard. The symmetry of each piece is impressive, with their design maintaining a perfect harmony, reflecting true craftsmanship. The wide, proportionate bases not only enhance the visual appeal but also provide the set with a remarkable stability during play, an essential feature for practical use.

What stands out to me are the luxurious black leather base pads, which are of high quality and offer a smooth, effortless glide across the board—an often-overlooked detail that makes a significant difference in the experience of play. When I first laid eyes on this set, its combination of aesthetic beauty and practical functionality left me no choice—I had to add it to my collection. It’s a set that marries form and function, providing not only an excellent display piece but a fully capable set for serious matches.

My opinion of this design…

The mystery surrounding this set only adds to its allure. Acquiring it second-hand without knowing the manufacturer or the set’s name is unfortunate, yet the quality speaks for itself. The knights in this set, in particular, are truly exemplary—perhaps some of the finest I’ve seen in a modern Staunton design. Their commanding presence and robust craftsmanship exude a readiness for battle, embodying the spirit of chess as a game of strategy and war.

From a collector’s perspective, the intrigue of not knowing the set’s origin enhances its uniqueness. It feels like owning a hidden gem within the chess world, and I’m determined to uncover its provenance, which only adds to the set’s narrative and appeal. The knight, especially, stands out as a favorite among contemporary designs—a figure that demands attention on the board.

For now, though, the enjoyment comes from simply owning and appreciating the craftsmanship. Whether for play or display, this set is a stunning example of modern design meeting the Staunton standard, and I look forward to discovering more about its origins.
