The Ajedrez “Magdalena” Staunton Chess Set by: “Jonathan Osorio”.

What JONATHAN did…
The Ajedrez “Magdalena” Staunton Chess Set is the creation of a highly talented artist who has reimagined the classic Staunton design with a distinctive Argentinian flair. This set—particularly the knight—embodies practicality, intention, and playability. It’s truly a player’s set. The knight is carved from a single solid piece of wood, rather than assembled from two separate pieces as is common with most knights. Each piece is proportioned perfectly in relation to the others, honoring the core design principles that define a true Staunton set.
The dark pieces are crafted from “Guayubira” (Patagonula americana), a hardwood native to South America—especially Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. Known for its strength and rich appearance, Guayubira features a striking contrast of light and dark browns, often highlighted by deep black streaks. The light pieces are made from “Guatambú,” also known as (Pau Marfim), a prized hardwood appreciated for its pale yellow to ivory hue, fine texture, and durability. The combination of these two woods creates a beautiful, organic contrast—so natural that the opposing sides seem destined to face off across the board.
The artist behind this exceptional set is “Jonathan Osorio” of Argentina. A passionate chess enthusiast and devoted reader of literature, Jonathan approaches his craft as a deeply personal form of artistic expression. He believes that each piece he creates carries a piece of his soul—and that belief is reflected in the character and presence of every sculpted form.

My opinion of this design…
The Ajedrez “Magdalena” Staunton Chess Set is a true work of art, an inspired blend of tradition and regional craftsmanship. It captures the timeless elegance of the Staunton design while introducing subtle, tasteful Argentinian character that sets it apart. The single-piece knight carving is a standout feature, showcasing both technical skill and artistic vision. The pairing of Guayubira and Guatambú woods not only creates a visually stunning contrast but also reflects a deep respect for natural materials. This set isn’t just beautiful—it’s balanced, functional, and built for serious play. For any collector or player, it’s a unique and meaningful addition to the board.
This is the very first set of this design ever sold, and I’m truly honored and excited to be its first owner. The set is even more breathtaking in person than in the photos—an absolute visual masterpiece. The craftsmanship is exceptional, and the woods are as beautiful as wood can be, radiating warmth, richness, and elegance. It’s a stunning addition to any collection.
