The 1885-1890 Jaques (Lasker) chess set by “Jaques of London”.

What they did…

Allow me to present a distinguished set of Jaques Lasker Chessmen, circa 1885-1890, housed in their *appropriate* green waisted leather casket. The pieces are crafted from fine Boxwood and Ebony, with the King standing at an elegant 3.5 inches, featuring a 1.75-inch base diameter. True to their era, these authentic Staunton chess pieces rest atop green English baize and are masterfully weighted for optimal playability. The Knights are designed in the unmistakable Lasker style, adding both character and historical significance.

*(Leather caskets were mainly sold with ivory chess sets, but it’s possible that customers could have requested one for a wooden set if they preferred. Typically, the green label was used for wooden sets, but Jaques also applied it to ivory sets at that time. Finding a leather casket with a wooden set is rare, but until there’s clear evidence proving these caskets were strictly for ivory sets, I consider it an original pairing {as does Frank Caramatta}.)*

The White King is stamped with the prestigious “Jaques London” mark on the rim of the base, a hallmark of authenticity. Additionally, the Kingside Rooks and Knights bear the distinctive red King’s crown on their summits. The set’s King height is often referred to as “Tournament Size,” signifying its intended use for serious competitive play.

This particular set, produced during the 1880s, epitomizes the elegance and craftsmanship of the Jaques Lasker style. The chessmen are most fittingly displayed on a board with 2.25-inch squares, where their beauty and precision can be fully appreciated. A truly remarkable set, steeped in history, ideal for both play and display. (FYI: I somehow misplaced the Knights with the Bishops on the white side lol…).

My opinion of this design…

The Jaques Lasker Chessmen set from 1885-1890 is a remarkable example of historical craftsmanship. With its elegant Boxwood and Ebony pieces, topped off by a 3.5-inch King, this set perfectly captures the timeless Staunton design. The Lasker-style Knights add a unique touch, and the original green leather casket gives it an authentic vintage feel. The set’s balance, weight, and craftsmanship make it ideal for both serious play and as a collector’s item. A beautiful piece for any chess enthusiast or collector.
